Italian heritage in Jefferson country
Founded in 1976 by Gianni Zonin of Italy's Zonin winemaking family, Barboursville Vineyards helped prove that European vinifera could flourish in central Virginia. It is best known for Italian-influenced wines and its flagship Octagon Bordeaux-style red.
The estate surrounds the ruins of a mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson for Governor James Barbour, with vineyards rolling toward the Blue Ridge. Visitors can taste in the Library 1821 room and dine at the on-site Palladio Restaurant and stay at the 1804 Inn.
What you'll taste
Tastings and flights in the Library 1821 room showcase the estate's vinifera wines and the signature Octagon red, paired with cheese, charcuterie, and a trattoria-style menu; reservations are recommended.
Worth knowing: The vineyards encircle the ruins of a mansion Thomas Jefferson designed for Governor James Barbour, a National Historic Landmark.
