California's First Premium Winery
Founded in 1857 by Agoston Haraszthy, the colorful Count of Buena Vista, this is widely regarded as California's first premium winery and one of the most historically important sites in American wine. Today the estate has been restored under proprietor Jean-Charles Boisset, pouring Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Chardonnay rooted in its storied heritage.
The historic tasting room sits about a mile from Sonoma Square, set among original stone buildings that date to the 1850s and 1860s. Guests taste in the 1862 Press House or out in the fountain courtyard, and can explore the interactive Wine Tool Museum in the old Champagne Cellar or settle into the Bubble Lounge.
What you'll taste
Taste flagship reds like The Sheriff of Buena Vista alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the courtyard or historic Press House; reservations are recommended, especially for groups.
Worth knowing: Named the #4 Best Winery Tour in the U.S. by USA Today, and recognized as California's first premium winery, founded in 1857.
