Six Generations on Rhinefarm
Jacob Gundlach bought 400 acres of Sonoma land in 1858 and named it Rhinefarm, founding what is today California's oldest continuously family-owned winery, now led by the sixth generation. The estate is best known for Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir, with sought-after small lots of dry Gewurztraminer, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc and Tempranillo.
The 320-acre regenerative-organic-certified estate sits at the crossroads of Sonoma Valley, Carneros and Napa Valley, against the Mayacamas Mountains. A relaxed, down-to-earth vibe pairs with one of the winery's biggest draws: a stroll through its 10,000-square-foot underground caves.
What you'll taste
Sip estate Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and dry Gewurztraminer by the glass, bottle or as a seated flight, with cave and vineyard tours available; walk-ins are welcome, though tours and rainy-season tables are best reserved.
Worth knowing: California's oldest continuously family-owned winery, founded in 1858 and still run by the founding family.
