Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, chauffeured.
The estate whose Cabernet beat Bordeaux in Paris — set against the Stags Leap palisades on the Silverado Trail.
- Known for Judgment of Paris-winning Cabernet Sauvignon
- About 1.5 hours from San Francisco
- Door-to-door — nobody driving home but us
The Cabernet that beat Bordeaux
Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars made the wine that changed Napa's reputation overnight. Today the estate is owned by the Antinori family of Tuscany.
Tastings look out over the famed SLV and FAY vineyards, with a temperature-controlled cave Great Room at the heart of the visit.
What you'll taste
Cabernet Sauvignon is the focus — the flagship CASK 23, the single-vineyard SLV and FAY bottlings, and the approachable ARTEMIS, plus the KARIA Chardonnay. Visits are seated and by reservation; the estate is 21 and over.
Worth knowing: Its 1973 Cabernet took first place at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, beating Bordeaux's first-growths; a bottle now sits in the Smithsonian.
